# validation_error

> The request is invalid.

| Status | Type |
| - | - |
| `400` | `invalid_request_error` |

The request failed validation and the cause couldn't be classified further.

Examples:

* a request body that isn't valid JSON
* an unknown entity or contact ID in `POST /v1/distributions`
* a directory entity that can't be published, such as one with an invalid
  entity type
