# Distribution

> A set of payments from a vehicle to its investors

A distribution pays out from one [vehicle](https://docs.nova.net/types/vehicle.md) to one or more
[entities](https://docs.nova.net/types/entity.md). Each recipient gets a
[distribution payment](https://docs.nova.net/types/distribution-payment.md), listed under `payments`.

Creating a distribution through the API publishes it right away, so it starts
as `published`. Creating it records the notifications without sending emails;
payment emails can still go out later as money moves. Use `sender_url` to
manage it in the Nova dashboard.

## Status

| Status | Meaning | Final |
| - | - | - |
| `draft` | Created in the Nova dashboard, not yet published | No |
| `published` | Published. Each payment now moves through its own [status](https://docs.nova.net/types/distribution-payment.md#status) | No |
| `approved` | The sender approved the distribution in the Nova dashboard | No |
| `executed` | The sender marked the distribution executed in the Nova dashboard | Yes |
| `cancelled` | Cancelled before it was executed | Yes |

Each status has a matching timestamp: `published_at`, `approved_at`,
`executed_at` and `cancelled_at`. Each is `null` until the distribution
reaches that status.

> [!NOTE]
>
> A distribution's status does not track money movement. Use each payment's
> [status](https://docs.nova.net/types/distribution-payment.md#status), and its
> [transactions](https://docs.nova.net/types/transaction.md#workflow), for that.

## Dates

`distribution_date` is when the distribution pays out, in
`distribution_timezone`. A payment can override it with its own
`distribution_date_override`. See [`ZonedDateTime`](https://docs.nova.net/types/zoned-date-time).
