# Entity

> A person or organization your vehicles pay

An entity is an investor or other recipient in your organization's directory,
such as an individual, an LLC or a trust. [Distribution payments](https://docs.nova.net/types/distribution-payment.md)
are paid to entities, at their [payment instructions](https://docs.nova.net/types/payment-instructions.md).

`type` is the entity's legal form, e.g. `individual`, `llc` or `trust`. Use
`external_type` and `external_reference` to store your own type and
identifier.

An entity is linked to a [vehicle](https://docs.nova.net/types/vehicle.md) automatically when a
distribution from that vehicle includes a payment to it.
